A Vision across Boundaries

As we begin a new year, the phrase, "a vision across boundaries" continues to stretch my mind and heart. I first heard it several years ago during a graduate course. Our teacher noted that skin, something that seems like a definite boundary, is continually exchanging elements from within and without -- moisture, sun, air, and so on -- since all is interconnected and interdependent.

At this time of New Year's resolutions, it seems like an excellent chance to reflect on one's vision. Is it a vision across boundaries? Is my/our vision helping birth a vision across boundaries of:

  • Feelings of superiority and inferiority
  • Fears, painful memories, hurts, and insecurities
  • Prejudices and biases that blind
  • Cultures and traditions
  • Spiritual and theological differences
  • Language and identification (i.e.: we/they, conservative/liberal, rich/poor)
  • Continents, nations, and regions
  • Race, religion, class
  • (Maybe you can think of other boundaries?)

As this new year begins, we could resolve to develop or strengthen, personally and communally, "a vision across boundaries" -- since all is interconnected and interdependent in our beautiful, God-is-with-us world.
