| Leader Lost is shared in honor of Sergio Vieira de Mello, 1948-2003, United Nations special representative to Iraq, who was killed August 19, 2003, in a suicide bomber attack on the United Nations compound in Baghdad. He was lauded as a courageous and committed diplomat for his work in postwar Kosovo and East Timor. He spent the majority of his career working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva and served in humanitarian and peace-keeping operations in Bangladesh, Sudan, Cyprus, Mozambique, and Peru. |
